Favorite season

Fall is my favorite season.

Fall is my favorite season because of the leaves changing color, the clothes or fashion, and the weather.

Fall is the prettiest season to me. It is also the time for Halloween, the Fall Festival, football games, and bonfires and hayrides.

Metacognition Danielle Rolley

When I encounter material I'm reading, my thinking depends on what I am reading and then I organize my thinking depending on what I want to take away from the material. When I am reading something I am interested in my thoughts are normally consumed in what I am reading. When I am interested in what I am reading I am not only thinking about what I am reading but I am taking it in and learning from it. There is usually no reason for me to try and organize my thoughts when I am reading material that I am interested in. When I encounter reading material that I am not interested in or boring material I have to constantly fight to keep my thinking focused on what I am reading in order to gain anything from it. I usually organize my thoughts by making sure there are no other distractions around me and when I feel like my thinking is drifting away from what I am reading I concentrate harder and reread the part of the reading I drifted off on. If I do not organize my thoughts when reading difficult or boring material then I won't take anything away from the material and if the material is something school related then it's important for me to organize my thoughts. When I encounter material that is too difficult for me or over my head then I try to organize my thinking so that I relate the material to something I already know. I feel like this is really good advice that I will give my students when they come across difficult reading material.

When it comes to writing material it is harder to get my thoughts organized. I really enjoy writing about something I am interested in or that I am really familiar with because my thoughts come easily about what I want to write. However when I have a lot I want to write about it is hard to know where to start so it is important to organize my thoughts first before I start writing. I usually do this by brainstorming and creating outlines. When it comes to writing about something I am either not interested in or that is difficult to write about, then it takes a lot for me to get my thinking focused. I usually create my own questions about the topic that I try to answer in my writing. This gives me some initiative to start writing and a starting point and then I go from there.

Danielle Rolley's Favorite Children's book

One of my favorite children's books of all time is "The Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn. This book is about a little raccoon named Chester who is scared and sad to go to school. His mom Mrs. Raccoon takes his hand and kisses it, she then tells him that no matter how many times he washes his hand the kiss will always be there. This comforts Chester and and makes him feel better. He then becomes excited for school and not scared anymore. Then as he goes to leave for school he kisses his moms hand and tells her that no matter how many times she washes her hands it will always be there.

I like this book so much because I think it is heartwarming, well written, and it has great illustrations. I used to get homesick every year when school would start and my mom would always find a way to make me feel better so I can relate to this book. I also liked this book because not alot of children's books have raccoons as the characters and I think raccoons are cute, especially in this book.

I would incorporate "The Kissing Hand" into my first grade classroom by reading it on the first day of school. I would use this book as an ice breaker as well as a way to comfort those students that are nervous, sad, or scared about starting their first day of school. This book could also be used on Mother's Day to show the relationship between a child and their mother and how mothers are always there for their children and should be appreciated.

Literacy Snapshot Danielle

Before this literacy project I didn't really realize everything in my daily life that counts as a form of literacy. I never thought that being on facebook, checking my email, and surfing the internet were forms of literacy activities. I knew that reading a book or textbook, reading a magazine or even reading a menu were all literacy activities, however they none of them really took up a lot of time during my day. Once I realized all the activities that really do count as literacy activities I also realized how much literacy activities take up my daily life.

The literacy activities I mostly engage in are facebook, twitter, checking emails, oncourse, and surfing the internet. I found after keeping track for the past 3 days that those few activities are common things that I engage in more than twice a day. Twitter I tend to only engage in once a day. Other literacy activites I engage in are reading textbooks and reading menus. I have gone out to eat a couple of times in the past 3 days so menu reading is a literacy activity that was common. However menu reading is not a daily literacy activity and is one that I will go days or a week without doing. Textbook reading is a daily activity that I engaged in only once or twice a day the past 3 days. However Textbook reading is a literacy activity that will increase in my daily life as the school year progresses.

Most of my literacy activities are done in my apartment or at home. I check my facebook or twitter on my phone alot and I sometimes surf the internet for specific things whenever I am out of the apartment or home. Reading textbooks, checking emails, and surfing the internet are mostly done at home. Reading menus is a literacy activity that always takes place in some sort of resturant. I really enjoyed this literacy project because it was interesting to me how many times I engage in a literacy activity and all the things that really count as a literacy activity that never really occured to me were. On a more negative note it occured to me during this project that I spend way to much of my time on facebook or on the interenet.
